... Excessive heat warning in effect from 1 PM to 6 PM this afternoon...
The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued an excessive heat warning for elevations below 4000 feet in southern Nevada... northwest Arizona and southeast California which is in effect from 1 PM to 6 PM this afternoon. This replaces the excessive heat watch previously in effect.
Temperatures this afternoon for the valleys and deserts within the warning area will climb to dangerous levels for late August. High temperatures will be around 108 degrees in the Las Vegas Valley and near 111 degrees in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area... Laughlin... Needles... Mesquite... Lake Havasu City... and Bullhead City. In southeast California... the Owens Valley will be around 102... Barstow will see readings around 109 and Death Valley is expected to reach 123 degrees.
An excessive heat warning is issued when temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body if precautions are not taken. The hot temperatures will create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible. Use extra caution and remember to drink plenty of fluids... stay out of the sunshine and in an air-conditioned room if possible and check up on elderly relatives and neighbors.
